There are many available publications regarding the need for a serious rethink of our current model for diagnosis and management of the pain component of injuries, and pain in general. This is most prolific in the area of back pain, which is understandable given the extraordinary magnitude of this problem in the developed world both from a patient outcome perspective as well as direct and indirect expenses to the community. This is money that could well be diverted to other much more needed health care concerns where truly effective management is poorly funded.

I found an article recently that summarised this problem eloquently and succinctly. The author has granted me permission to reproduce it on this website for educational purposes.

So here it is, in the hope that it draws some blood … and I don’t mean from a “sexy scalpel”!
